Animals large and small invaded Orton The April Farmers’ Market at Orton (Saturday 14 April) included a few animals not normally seen at the Market – rabbits and alpacas! Leanne Duerden, Market Co-ordinator, explains: “Every so often we create a hide and seek-style competition to encourage younger shoppers to look at the stalls as carefully as they can. For April, continuing an Easter bunny theme, there were 8 white rabbits hidden around the Market and chocolate prizes to be won by those who find them all. About 35 of our younger shoppers took part and won a prize.” The larger animals were visitors from Why Not Alpacas? at Sedbergh and their owners, Robin and Caroline Sandys-Clarke. Three of these amazing animals were on show and Robin and Caroline were on hand to talk about alpaca husbandry, history and also the beautiful fleece and yarn that these animals provide. They also brought along a selections of garments and accessories made from alpaca fibre and the knitted hats proved very popular on a cold April day!
“We try to make Orton Farmers’ Market a great day out as well as an opportunity to buy the best of local food and drink,” says Leanne. “The April Market is usually a popular one with lots of visitors as well as regular customers. It also gave us a chance to promote the first of this year’s Pooley Bridge Sunday Farmers’ Markets which will be on the field behind The Sun Inn on Sunday 29 April. There’ll be at least 13 local food, drink and craft producers at Pooley Bridge this year and we’re hoping for some fine days and successful markets.” The next Orton Farmers’ Market opens at 9.30am and runs until 2pm on Saturday 12 May and there will be refreshments available throughout the day in the Market Hall, at All Saints’ Church and also at Kennedy’s Chocolates café and The George Hotel. The first Pooley Bridge Farmers’ Market opens at 10am on Sunday 29 April and is open until 2pm that afternoon.
