The Latest ... Spinners and a lunch time treat at Orton Visitors to last Saturday’s Orton Farmers’ Market (12th June) were able to enjoy cookery demonstrations and inspiration from local cook and food expert, Diana Brown, as well as displays of raw fleece and wool spinning by members of The Wool Clip and Eden Valley Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers. Diana created a special Lunch for Two using local lamb and a selection of ingredients from local producers. “The menu included Venison Toad in the Hole (with venison sausage from Deer ‘n’ Dexter), Loin of Lamb with Hazelnuts and Apricots (with lamb from Kitridding) and then Duck Sausage with Apple and Tomato Compote (using David Knipes’ duck sausage),” said Diana. “And for a starter I served Bruschetta with various toppings from Grub, Leagrams Organic Dairy and Bessy Beck Trout Farm.” Once the demonstrations were complete, Stuart Lambert from Kitridding Farm and Mike Hindle from Kendal Cordials tucked into the lunch, all with some of Mike’s summer cordial. Meanwhile, in the Market Hall, Jean Wildish of Tinker Tailors - along with Marion Woolcott from The Wool Clip co-operative and contacts from the Eden Valley Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers – were tackling a large pile of raw fleece and demonstrating wool spinning: “I have had my spinning wheel at a couple of recent Orton Farmers’ Markets and people seem to find it interesting as well as a relaxing thing to watch,” said Jean. “We had the opportunity to explain the process to visitors and to show how to create yarn from woollen fleece.” The next Orton Farmers’ Market opens at 9.30am and runs until 2.30pm on Saturday 10 July and the next Pooley Bridge Farmers’ Market will be in the village on Sunday 27 June. |
