Best dressed at Orton Christmas Market

Christmas came early to Orton on Saturday (10 December) as the December Farmers’ Market took over the village with music from Appleby Silver Band and carol singers from Orton C of E Primary School, free mince pies and a visit from Father Christmas himself as well as more than 40 stalls selling the best of local food, drink and craft.

“December’s Orton Farmers’ Market always feels really Christmassy,” says Market Co-ordinator, Leanne Duerden, “and there were plenty of opportunities to shop for food and drink, pick up unique hand-crafted gifts and even choose a tree, wreaths and other decorations.”

Each year, Leanne organises a best dressed stall competition to encourage regular and occasional stallholders alike to enter into the Christmas spirit.  This year’s winner was Shelley Riddell with her “helper”, Marion Law, both of Bessy Beck Trout Fishery at Newbiggin-on-Lune.  Stalls were judged by Orton resident and former local head teacher, John Falshaw – a familiar face from the monthly raffles and fundraisers at the Market.

“John has been a regular since the Market began in 2001,” says Leanne, “but he’s retiring from raffle ticket duties in the New Year so it was good to be able to mark this with him judging the stalls and we were also able to thank him with a small gift from the Market.”

The first Orton Farmers’ Market of the New Year opens at 9.30am and runs until 2.30pm on Saturday 14 January.  There’ll be free hearty and wholesome soup on offer as well as special offers from producers, refreshments in All Saints’ Church and also in the Market Hall.
