Fairtrade
(Orton farmers market only)
We didn't really know which category to put this in but since our Fairtrader has tea and coffee we plumped for the Drink section.
By their very nature, Fairtrade products cannot claim to be local but we feel that the principles of the Fairtrade movement are entirely in keeping with the spirit of the farmers market movement.
Sarah Yallop sells Fairtrade teas, coffes, sugars, dried fruit including pineapple and mango, chocolate and cereals as well as a few craft items.
The idea behind Fairtrade is to ensure that the farmers and craftworkers in Asia, Africa and Latin America are given a realistic price for their goods that covers the costs of production and allows them to feed their families and invest in their communities through clean water, schooling and medical services. It gives workers a chance to survive and to support themselves and their families with dignity. These people don't want charity, but they need our support.
