Stoneyhead Farm - Traditionally reared pork.
John Noble rears his pigs on his farm just 3 miles from Orton. They are kept in deep bedded straw yards with plenty of room for play and exercise and weaned for 12 weeks - 3 times longer than pigs raised for the supermarket shelves. Once weaned, they are fed and watered by hand. This stress free environment produces tender and succulent pork. John's pigs are Gloucester Old Spot/Saddleback crosses. Gloucester Old Spots are a rare breed, renowned for meat that is tender, succulent and full of flavour. John does not attempt to reduce the natural back fat - without this there is no real flavour - so the joints have lovely crackling and don't shrink to half their size when cooked. Enjoy the taste of pork as it used to be - and still should be.

Kiridding Farm - Fell bred lamb and high quality beef
Stuart and Chistine Lambert raise their lambs and cattle to a very high standard. The hardy Swaledale sheep, being the indigenous breed of the area, is well suited to the adverse weather conditions. Its thick coat protects it from the elements and it has the stamina to survive rain, sleet and snow. All the stock are homebred - raised on natural grasses, herbs and good views! And they do not leave the homestead from birth until slaughter - traceability at its best!

Raisgill Hall - Beef and Fell bred lamb.
Steve and Barbara Dunning farm at Raisgill Hall just 1 mile from Orton village. They rear Kendal Rough Fell sheep - the native breed traditionally reared in the local fells. Kendal Rough Fell is traditional, tasty and high quality. The sheep are reared 'extensively'. This means that they are free to graze the wild Cumbrian fells and are raised and matured following local sheep breeding traditions. Raisgill Hall farm is a member of FABBL (Farm Assured British Beef and Lamb). This external validation scheme provides an extra reassurance that all the livestock is reared humanely with good access to food, water, shelter and space. Orton farmers market is the only farmers market that Barbara and Steve attend so if you want to enjoy their produce
you will have to visit Orton or Pooley Bridge.

David Knipe - Chicken and duck. Eggs.
David Knipe raises his poultry on his farm at Levens in the Lyth Valley in Cumbria. They are raised in light and spacious barns to protect them from the heavy rain the area is prone to. David feeds his poultry on a well balanced diet of maize, wheat, sunflower and Radio 5 Live (he reckons they enjoy the sport). The feed has no artificial additives or growth hormones although marigold petals are added to give the yolks a lovely yellow colour. The birds are allowed to mature at a natural rate for 12 weeks before slaughter.
All of this adds up to really flavoursome chicken and duck - and eggs that frequently have double yolks so you get twice the goodness for your money! David is a regular at Orton and Pooley Bridge farmers markets. - Contact
